Blue Economy will play a fundamental role in the future development of Portugal and is an alternative answer for a more sustainable planet: economic expansion, social growth and environmental conservation.
BioHub is a pioneer of change, since it is the first company in Portugal, developing the integration of marine technologies. Biohub invites technology designers, scientists, researchers and investors to join this project and participate in the development of systems, inspired by how marine ecosystems function. It is a structure, in which the by-products (wastes) from one species are recycled to become inputs (fertilizers, food and energy) for another.

The ocean is highly contaminated (pollutants, plastics, pesticides), the world population is increasing at a high rate and the scarcity of resources is a reality.
In 2016 the Portuguese government defined, as target, that Blue Economy must be responsible for 10% of GDP in 2020. Since the Exclusive Economic Zone of Portugal has an area of approximately 4 000 000 Km2, and the majority is Atlantic Ocean, there is an urge to explore its potential, through a new perspective: developing new technologies, inspired by the ocean.
Besides European Union aims that in 2030 all agricultural and animal production should be organic.
